The colour of memory – 42x52cm

Water and the ocean have always been a central part of my work, and of me. The substance and nature of which I feel intimately connected to. Water is life. The immense and flowing character of the ocean echoes my neuro-divergent way of thinking, and non-binary nature. We’re all water from different rivers That’s why it’s so easy to meet We’re all water in the vast, vast ocean Someday we’ll evaporate together Yoko Ono I am interested in exploring how we perceive reality. In how we filter and colour our experience and understanding of the world through our moods and memories. And in how the ever changing state of the world, and of ourselves, mutually influences one another. ‘The colour of memory’ is an invitation to contemplate what we see and experience. To notice our subjective realities and the fallibility of memory, and to question how the world is viewed and constructed. This painting was created from an intuitive collage of two different cognitive processes, memory and dreaming, which then interact with the physical act of painting to form my work. The painting becomes its own reality as it takes elements from the physical, cognitive and imagined worlds, combining them into something new. A confluence of fleeting moments where the distinction between the inaccurate memory and the painted reality become obscured. Painting from the sea in my memory, I’ve played around with the colours. Mixing together gentle pastels, vibrant rainbows, and hazard-warning fluros to create an inner seascape. An altered place which is both inviting and repelling, beautiful and dangerous. An Ocean that spans the gap between the ever-changing interior and exterior world. Void of horizon, my seascape is a fluid interplay of overlapping and intermingling realities. ‘The colour of memory’ is an illusory composition where form and colour speak of alternate realities and alternative ways of being and understanding. It is the metamorphosis of a remembered reality.
