After the Rain – 76x101cm

‘After the Rain’ depicts the stillness of dawn following a storm at the Ivo Rowe Rockpool, Coogee. An abandoned beach towel draped over a wooden post implies human activity, embodying an ‘absent presence’ that subtly animates the scene. Drawing on my background as a production designer in theatre and film, my current art practice explores the concept of a ‘theatre without actors,’ where the landscape becomes an ‘empty stage’ inhabited by an unseen presence. Central to my work is the interplay of light on reflective, shimmering surfaces such as water. The rock pool, concealed below the Coogee boardwalk and accessed via steep cliff stairs, offers a secluded and peaceful retreat from the rhythms of everyday life. This hidden haven, close to where I live, has inspired several of my oil and acrylic paintings on canvas. Through these works, I aim to capture the quiet drama and ephemeral beauty of such watery liminal spaces on the Sydney coastline
